Deep Understanding
Make sense of what is read, heard and seen, and express ideas with understanding.
Our teaching charter
We aim to develop understanding, critical judgement and purposeful communication, alongside the capacity to keep learning. School assessments matter, and teaching also makes room for curiosity, imaginative expression, reading enjoyment and thoughtful discussion.
Make sense of what is read, heard and seen, and express ideas with understanding.
Ask questions, make connections and support interpretations with relevant evidence.
Choose language that serves the purpose, audience and situation.
Use the learner’s work to choose suitable explanation, practice, feedback and support.
Build confidence in making choices, checking work and seeking useful help.
Return to learning over time and check how it is used in a different task or context.
Deep Understanding, Critical Reasoning and Purposeful Communication describe capabilities we develop. Responsive Teaching guides our decisions; Independent Learning and Learning Transfer are longer-term aims. These are connected commitments, not six scores or a fixed lesson sequence.
Choose significant teaching activities because they serve a worthwhile learning goal. Respond to the student’s work, needs and task conditions while preserving an appropriately broad English learning experience. An observation from one task is not a complete judgement of a child’s ability.
Use explicit explanation, examples, discussion and guided practice where they help. Feedback should lead to a useful action by the learner. Short activities, including Micro Missions, support a specific purpose and reconnect with meaningful reading, speaking or writing.
Give appropriate help, and distinguish what the learner does with support from what they can do on their own. As understanding develops, reduce prompts that supply the answer. A new or more demanding task may require support again.
Students can ask for clarification, question feedback and offer defensible alternative answers. Teaching should be age-respectful, appropriately challenging and attentive to emotional safety. Discuss concerns constructively with the learner and parent.
Consider the task, its demands and the help involved before interpreting a result. A supported rewrite, successful retry or completed mission does not by itself show retention or independent application. School and official assessment requirements continue to govern their own marks. We do not guarantee grades.
When progress is insufficient, reconsider the task, prerequisites, support and teaching approach. Adapt the next step when the evidence warrants it. Technology, models and checklists should support the capability being learned, rather than do the thinking for the student.
Use relevant learner information for the service and protect it appropriately. Permission to teach a child does not automatically authorise promotional use of their work or identity. Our privacy notice explains enquiries and the planned optional email updates. Marketing permission is separate from teaching and student records.
